SAN ANGELO, TX — Sheriff Nick Hanna was officially re-sworn into office on Thursday, Jan. 2, during a brisk morning outdoor ceremony at the steps of the Tom Green County Courthouse.
The event also marked the start of a historic year, as both the county and the sheriff’s office prepare to celebrate their 150th anniversary in 2025.
Senior District Judge Barbara Walther administered the oath of office, after which Hanna addressed the crowd.
“Today’s oath for me is a reminder, and for you is a reminder, of the immense trust placed in us by the people of Tom Green County and the state of Texas,” Hanna said. “Those words are a promise, a promise to serve and protect with honor and fairness.”
Hanna also highlighted the county’s sesquicentennial celebrations, noting their significance to the community.
“In a few days, Tom Green County is going to celebrate 150 years. The sheriff’s office is going to celebrate the same 150 years this April. This is our sesquicentennial year that you’re a part of,” he said.
Reflecting on his years in law enforcement, Hanna urged his deputies to approach their work with dedication.
“When you’re on patrol, working cases, or handling mental health crises, I want it to be personal to you,” he said. “We don’t give anything less than a perfect effort. We live in an imperfect world, but there’s nothing that says we can’t give a perfect effort.”
In addition to Sheriff Hanna, nearly the entire Tom Green County Sheriff’s Office, except for those actively on patrol, was sworn in during the ceremony.
Chief Deputy Roger Looka and other deputies joined Hanna in reaffirming their commitment to public service. Hanna acknowledged the sacrifices made by his team, especially during the holidays, and commended their unwavering dedication to the community.
Hanna’s law enforcement career spans over three decades, including 16 years as a Texas Ranger. He played a key role in high-profile cases, such as the investigation of the FLDS compound in Eldorado and the disappearance of Brandon Lawson. After joining the sheriff’s office as chief deputy in 2019, Hanna quickly announced his candidacy for sheriff and won with over 60% of the vote in the March elections.
