County Commissioners Officially Decommission Old Jail

SAN ANGELO, TX – Tom Green County Commissioners Tuesday officially voted to decommission the old jail located at 122 W. Harris.

Tom Green County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Nick Hanna told commissioners that jailers moved into the new county jail on July 7, 2020 and the old jail had to be officially decommissioned to avoid having to be inspected by the Texas Commission on Jail Standards.

Commissioners discussed maintaining the former facility to keep it from further deteriorating.  Hanna told the court the old jail would not pass inspection now.

Tom Green County Judge Steve Floyd will write a letter to the Jail Standards Commission informing the state of the decommissioning.

In other business, commissioners approved setting county elected officials salaries for FY21.  The court voted unanimously to set salaries for the 28 elected officials at the same rate as the current year with the exception of the four Constables who would receive a 5% increase over last year.

This jail isn't even very old. I remember it being built not long ago..... if it can't pass an inspection maybe you should have maintained it more responsibly. Us taxpayers are tired of footing the bill for your cities officials lack of foresight and judgement.
