Big Spring Water Plant Explodes, Sends Several to Hospital

 

BIG SPRING, TX – An estimated 20 people were hospitalized Tuesday night after a water treatment plant in Big Spring exploded.

Local news stations reported that the explosion occurred after a gas valve ruptured while crews were repairing a leaky tank at the water plant sometime before 10 p.m. According to Big Spring Mayor Karry McLellan, the gas valve ruptured at the water plant near the local high school.

After the explosion, the gas valve began leaking ammonia gas. Residents in the surrounding area were evacuated from their houses for safety reasons.

No serious injuries were reported and the explosion is currently under investigation.
