Multiple Volunteer Fire Departments Battle Barn Fire in Grape Creek

A barn in Grape Creek caught fire Monday evening at approximately 6:30 p.m. Grape Creek VFD responded immediately. Over the radio, firefighters were warned that tanks of propane may be stored in the barn.

The flaming barn is located just north of the Grape Creek Road overpass on the east side of the highway, about one-half mile from the frontage road.

Livestock was seen in the field adjacent the barn. We did not obtain the status on the possibility of animals injured near the flaming barn.

At 7 p.m., Quail Valley VFD called Grape Creek VFD over the radio and offered assistance. Carlsbad VFD is also reported to have responded. By 8 p.m., heavy smoke was still blowing across U.S. 87. We will update this story as more information becomes available.

Update 8:45 p.m.

Firefighters are asking for more water. A large tractor is being used to break up bales of hay so that the embers are sure to be extinguished. Horses can be seen in the pasture. Flames can still be seen inside the barn, which appears to be built of metal.

Update 9:30 p.m.

The fire is not out. Hay appears to be fueling the fire. Firefighters are using a backhoe to pull the hay out, break apart the bales, and spead it out. Then, foam is being applied to the hay. Grape Creek, Carlsbad, and Quail Valley VFDs are fighting the fire. Tom Green County Sheriff's Deputies are on the scene. Our reporter did not hear of injuries or see anyone transported via ambulance. Firefighters will be battling this blaze for several more hours.
