SAPD's Social Media Strategy Leads to Two Arrests

Two criminals on a guilt trip recently turned themselves in to the police after seeing their faces on a number of social media sites on a "Need to Identify" poster created by the San Angelo Police Department.

Within an hour of the SAPD posting pictures and requesting information on Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and Pinterest on Oct. 23, numerous citizens contacted the police to give anonymous tips on the identities of the two charged with burglary of a building and use of a stolen credit card.

Of the three the police were seeking, two showed up at the police station to speak with detectives and were released after their interviews. Detective Antoine Callum then obtained warrants for their arrests after a follow up investigation.

The credit card in question was reported missing from a burglarized storage unit in October. San Angelo resident Myan Largen (23) approached police in the area of W Avenue J and S Koenigheim on Friday to inform them she was aware of her arrest warrant for Burglary of a Building, and wanted to turn herself in.

Scott Knight (29), also of San Angelo, was arrested on Oct. 30 for Credit Card/Debit Card Abuse of the card missing from the unit burglarized by Largen.

A second man featured in the poster was identified, however he has not been charged with either crime.   

Several of the items reported stolen from the storage unit have since been recovered and returned to the victim.
