Michael Martin Murphey, singer of hits ‘Wildfire’ and ‘Geronimo’s Cadillac,’ and Texas Country Music Hall-of-Famer will be making a stop in San Angelo.
A limited number of people will get the opportunity to see a country music legend up close and personal when he brings his ‘Cowboy Christmas’ show to town Dec. 5.
The Christmas Ball, hosted by the San Angelo Cultural Affairs Council and Fort Concho, will be one of the stops on the 20th anniversary tour of when ‘Cowboy Christmas’ hit the charts.
Murphey is the number one recording artist in Traditional Cowboy Music, not to mention his crossover hits in pop and country genres.
Older fans will get to experience a blast from the past, while the younger ones will be introduced to a music virtuoso.
“This is my favorite season of the year,” Murphey said on his website, “we remember our fathers and mothers. We celebrate our children and we treasure our friends and the many blessing given by our Lord. It really brings out the very best in all of us.”
‘Cowboy Christmas’ is a multimedia production featuring videos, poetry, stories, and Murphey’s performance of both his Christmas songs and his hits, like ‘Wildfire’ and ‘Geronimo’s Cadillac.’
“This will be something all ages can enjoy,” said Daniel Makins of the San Angelo Cultural Affairs Council, “we were able to bring it [the concert] to San Angelo.”
Makins remembers the days when the ‘barn raising’ concerts kicked off Christmas at Fort Concho in efforts to raise funds to build the Living History Stables at the fort, but once it was built, the parties lost interest.
Makins is hopeful that this concert will be successful enough to rejuvenate the event.
“I’m excited about the possibility of this becoming a tradition in years to come,” he said, mentioning that the Cultural Affairs Council will do its best to make a concert at the Fort Concho Stables an annual event.
“It’s a program that will be very niche-fitting in San Angelo and one of the highest quality productions in San Angelo,” explained Makins, citing the history and success of Michael Martin Murphey
Tickets will soon be on sale Nov. 15 at the normal outlets and it’s expected to sell out, so look to get those tickets as soon as you can.
