City Council Gives the Green Light to Drag Boat Races

SAN ANGELO, TX – San Angelo City Council members approved two measures that will bring summer fun back to Lake Nasworthy on one of the coldest days of the year.

The council meeting was delayed for about two hours in anticipation of icy road conditions Tuesday morning.

The council voted unanimously to authorize the city manager to negotiate and execute an agreement with the Southern Drag Boat Association to host the 12th annual drag boat races at Lake Nasworthy.

As we reported earlier, Lucas Oil had operated the drag boat race series but disbanded them in 2018

On Nov. 8 last year, Lucas Oil announced it was ending its sponsorship of drag boat racing.  According to Lucas Oil, the Lucas Oil Drag Boat Racing Series ceased operations after almost a decade as the sanctioning body of drag boat racing.

"Lucas Oil has made the decision to discontinue its involvement in drag boat racing,” Lucas Oil Executive Vice-President Bob Patison said.

“The Lucas Oil Drag Boat Series will cease to exist after all matters related to the 2018 season have been concluded. It was a difficult decision to make, especially given our long history with the sport. However, the time has come for us to move on and afford the sport the opportunity to seek a new direction.”

The Southern Drag Boat Association hosted the races successfully at Lake Nasworthy last year.

City Parks and Recreation Director Carl White told council members attendance was down last year because the SDBA got a late start and didn't advertise enough.

White also said the races went smoother because the SDBA worked very well with the city.

In other business Tuesday morning, the council approved a lease extension with the company that leases water craft at Lake Nasworthy.

Water Dawgs, LLC operates the boat concession agreement at Mary E. Lee Park at Lake Nasworthy. This was the old "Concho Cruises" agreement that was transferred in February of 2018.

Water Dawgs wants to proceed with some much-needed improvements at the leased property and before they invest the time and money to do so, want to ensure that their lease is extended. We intend to make the new term 20 years, with no option to extend, under the same terms. Water Dawgs, LLC is not seeking any other changes to the original agreement.

The current lease term is up the end of December 2021 and has one option to extend for 5 years.
