San Angelo to See New Housing on Southland

San Angelo may see a new, contemporary apartment complex spring up in the near future.

Following a zone change from the Planning Commission on Monday morning, Greg Huling was given the go-ahead to build a three-story, 144-unit apartment complex on Southland Blvd.

“I’ve owned the property for eight or 10 years,” said Huling, “I was hoping it would become commercial property, but it just hasn’t.”

Huling now envisions a new contemporary apartment complex. “Most [apartment complexes] were built 20 to 30 years ago,” Huling said. “These will be new along the lines of granite countertops and washer/dryer hookups.”

Huling’s complex won’t be cheap, but they won’t be the fancy 30 West Lofts in downtown San Angelo.

The main concern is the fact that Bonham Elementary School is across the street from the land, and multiple members of the Planning Commission voiced concerns about increased traffic in the school zone.

Upon consideration of the larger commercial properties to the north, such as Sam’s Club, Wal-Mart, and Lowes, it was concluded that one apartment complex wouldn’t drastically increase traffic on Southland.

The motion passed four in favor and two opposed for the zone change.  Now all that remains to be seen is how long until Huling’s complex is open for business.

So, the council can vote down construction of new property just because they didn't have the foresight to not build an elementary school on a main road? This is weak. When Lamar was built, it was built slightly off the main road, but ten years from now, Twin Mountain drive and Southwest will probably be as busy or even busier than Southland currently is. We need new apartment complexes in this town. The amount of opposition that new apartment construction has faced in this town over the past decade leads me to believe that somebody is paying somebody off to keep new construction out.
We may need new apts but we really dont need any fancy ones... what are all these luxury apts going to do once the oil boom quits and no one else can afford even thier basic efficientcy! People in this town think we need all this new stuff and we have to jack up our prices on rent just cuz oilfield people can afford it! But what about us regular non oilfield job people we are gonna be ran out of house and home cuz we cant afford anything
