David Timothy (Tim) Edwards, 78, passed away on January 18, 2025. He was born November 29, 1946 in San Antonio, TX to Reverend and Mrs. Glen Edwards. He grew up in Pecos, TX.
Tim studied Political Science at Baylor University in Waco, TX through his junior year, then transferred to LSU for his senior year when his parents moved to Baton Rouge. He graduated from LSU and then returned to Baylor for law school. During college and law school, Tim worked at both a radio and TV station and loved his time as an on-air personality, one time doing the entire newscast by himself when he arrived to work to learn that everyone else had called in sick. His life changed forever when he met Georgia Alice (G.A.) Bacon. He knew from the moment he saw her that he would marry her. The two were married on June 5, 1971.
The couple moved to San Angelo in 1973 where Tim accepted his first job as a young lawyer. In 1978, he joined the firm that would become Ratliff & Edwards and spent the rest of his 40-year career in that partnership with Gerald Ratliff until his retirement in 2013. In addition to his law career, Tim served on the San Angelo City Council from 1985 to 1989 and then served as Mayor from 1989 to 1991. He was president of the Tom Green County BAR Association and served on the Texas Grievance Committee. Though his career in TV and radio broadcast ended early, he got great joy from announcing San Angelo football games. Following his retirement in 2013, he worked part-time as a mediator.
By far, Tim’s proudest and most important role was being a father to his four children, Rachel, Glen, Blake and Alice. He was a loving and present father who coached Little League teams, attended dance recitals, took his kids fishing and golfing, took them to almost every home Baylor football game, took them on boat rides at Lake Nasworthy, and so much more. One of Tim’s favorite things was taking family vacations, his two favorite destinations being Ruidoso, NM and New Orleans, LA. It was important to him that he tell his children as often as possible, usually on a daily basis, that he loved them and was proud of them.
One of Tim’s names, starting in 2003 with the birth of his first grandchild, was PawPaw and he was so very proud of his seven grandchildren. He loved to read funny books to them, sing sweet songs using their names, and make up stories to keep them entertained. He took them to the park and loved to drive them around San Angelo so they could look for the many painted sheep around town. No matter how many people were in the room, if PawPaw was there, grandchildren were drawn to him over everyone else.
Anyone who knew Tim knew that he had a sense of humor like none other. He loved making people laugh and told jokes and funny stories on a regular basis. Easter Sunday will never be the same for his family because of the version of lyrics he wrote to the classic Easter hymn “Christ The Lord is Risen Today.” While reading through his funeral wishes, the four kids were brought to laughter through their tears when they saw he’d written that he’d like a pastor to be juggling hymnals during his service.
Tim was frequently the target of teasing from G.A. and the kids for silly things he said and did, often when he wasn’t even trying to be funny. There are too many Dad stories to try to share them all, not to mention much of the colorful language would not be appropriate, but they are told often and always bring laughter, even in these dark days.
Tim was a great letter writer. The four kids received hundreds of handwritten letters from him during their college years. They were both sweet and funny, full of wit and wisdom. He was a big believer in writing thank you notes and really had a way with words that made the recipient feel special.
Tim was such a people person and knew how to make friends of strangers. His grandchildren often joked that he seemed to know everyone in San Angelo. He’d strike up a conversation with anyone anywhere and enjoyed learning what made people tick, from the top executive of a company to someone shining his shoes and everyone in between.
Tim was a member of Southland Baptist Church and was proud to be a Baptist preacher’s son. While he did not push his faith onto other people, his actions made it clear that he loved people as Jesus taught us to do. Through the years, he taught Sunday School, served as a Deacon, and served on the Pastor Search Committee. He also was a Stepehen Minister and volunteered with the Kids Eat Free program. Tim and G.A. led worship on Sunday mornings at Meadow Creek Nursing Home on a regular basis.
There were many things Tim did that many people never knew, including guest preaching in small churches around San Angelo, doing pro bono legal work, and volunteering for people in need, from driving them to and from appointments to providing financial support for necessities. He even agreed to teach a foreign exchange student how to drive (which proved to be a scary experience at times!) but resulted in the young man getting his driver’s license.
Tim’s life changed forever on May 17, 2024 when he lost the love of his life. While he did his best to move forward, his heart never healed and he was so ready to be reunited with his sweet G.A.
Tim is preceded in death by his wife, Georgia Alice Edwards, and his parents, David Glen Edwards and Helen Marie Edwards. He is survived by his children Rachel Ann Edwards Thomas and husband Randy Thomas of Highland Village, TX; David Glen Edwards II and wife Katie Greene Edwards, of Dallas, TX; Timothy Blake Edwards and wife Kelly Hicks Edwards, of Dallas, TX; and Alice Leigh Edwards, of Garland, TX; and his grandchildren Emma Grace Thomas, Hunter Timothy Thomas, Brooke Elizabeth Thomas, Madeleine May Edwards, David Richard Edwards, Georgia Helen Edwards and Margot Blake Edwards.
