Vernon Claud Smith, 90, passed away peacefully on Saturday morning, June 22, 2024.
Viewing will be from 12:00 PM - 8:00 PM on Wednesday, June 26, 2024 at Robert Massie Funeral Home. Graveside services will be at 2:00 PM Thursday, June 27,2024 at Eden Cemetery under the direction of Robert Massie Funeral Home.
Vernon was born on February 4, 1934 in Pottsville, TX to his parents, Bill and Allie Dutton Smith. He served in the U. S. Navy during the Vietnam War. Vernon worked for the State of Texas Highway Department for 37 years. He loved fishing, working with animals, traveling, spending time with friends and family, telling jokes, trading horses, trailers, and cars, etc... Vernon was an all-out handyman and very generous in helping others. He had accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior and was baptized.
He is preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Charlie, Cleve Wayne, and Ervin; six sisters, Fay, Willie, Jewel, Louise, Afleta, and Opal; 10 nieces and nephews; and his daughter, Kathy Elguea.
Vernon is survived by his children, Gaylon Smith, Brenda Lewellen, Dewayne Givens, Jana Whitten, and Rhonda Alsbrooks; grandchildren, Ava Jenice Juarez, Austin Elguea, Jimmy Don Lee, Kenny Lewellen, Scott Whitten, Mike Whitten, Brandy Lee, Samantha Malloy, Melissa Schneider, and Sheila Manning; 17 great grandchildren; and 4 great-great grandchildren.
He is also survived by his companion of 28 years, Linda Whitesell and her children, Connie Hair, Ed Chapman, and Tammy Flathouse and their families.
He was so loved and will be desperately missed by all.
