Oscar "Big O" Lopez, 56, went for his final ride on Sunday March 24, 2024.
Oscar, better known as "Big O" to his friends, "Mr. Lopez" to the police, EMTS, and hospital staff, or "Oscarito" to his mom, was a hell of a man. He was without a doubt the kind of person who played by his own rules - no matter the cost to himself or others. Big O was someone who loved to have a good time and valued his friends and family highly.
In his younger years, Oscar would "help" (very strong word, we know) his family run Villarreal & Sons Grocery Store, working with his dad to prepare the barbacoa. Even after his father's passing, the store being sold, and life moving on, Oscar would single-handedly be able to transport people back to the "good ol' days" with a pint of Villarreal & Sons' barbacoa.
When he wasn't reminiscing, Big O loved to teach and spend time with others. You never knew what kind of lesson you'd get with him. One day you may be learning to bait a hook & cast a line, then the next day you'd be learning how to pick the best cuts of meat at the grocery store.
Throughout his later years, Big O kept everyone on their toes. He would constantly be starting new projects, having some sort of epiphany, or going through a health crisis. One of his most infamous ongoing projects was his prized "Bomba". He loved working to restore the car to its original beauty. This was not a project he undertook alone. Oscar would recruit friends to help over a beer, cousins over a cigarette and stories, or his daughter over a Big Red (that he was DEFINITELY not supposed to have, much to her dismay).
At the end of it all, Big O made it a point to let you know he cared and through it all, God was with you. No matter what he faced, a quick Psalm 23, prayer, and "I love you" gave him the strength to face whatever came his way.
Passing on before Big O are his father, Oscar C. Lopez.
Left to cherish his memory (and inherit his many half-finished projects) are his mother, Leticia Lopez; daughter, Illianna Cabrera and husband Gavin; brother Sergio Lopez; nephew, Christian Lopez; and beloved furbaby, Smokey. Also surviving Big O are his uncle, Robert Villarreal and wife Amanda, aunt, Mary Villarreal; "other daughter" Lauryn Gonzalez, and many other extended tios, tias, primos, primas, and lifelong friends.
The reciting of the Divine Mercy will be held for Big O will be held at 6 PM on Thursday March 28th, 2024 in Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 10 AM on Friday March 29th, 2024 at Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel with interment will follow at Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
The family would like to sincerely thank the staff of Shannon Medical Center & Diana, Maggie, and DJ of Hospice of San Angelo for the unwavering care they gave Oscar during this difficult time.
The family would also like to thank Rudy and Bruno for the ongoing help and love they shared with Big O and his family.
In lieu of flowers, crack open a cold one, smoke a brisket, and have a good time for Big O.
"Regulators, mount up!"
