Connie Jean Jeffers took her angel trip on February 28, 2024, to be welcomed home by her Lord and Savior. She was born on October 7, 1954, in Bay City, Michigan to Floyd and Viola Schwartz. She graduated from John Glenn High School where she played in the marching band. She attended Northern Michigan University in Marquette where she obtained a Bachelor Degree in Nursing. Her specialty was Psychiatric Nursing and she worked as a psychiatric nurse in Daytona Beach, Florida before moving to San Angelo in 1979.
Connie was the Director of Nurses and later the Administrator at San Angelo Development Center before becoming the Director of Nurses at River Crest Hospital. The last fifteen years of her career were spent as the Office Manager of her husband, Dr. Joe Jeffer’s private practice in psychology. She had a rare combination of both administrative and people skills. She was the first contact for new patients and quickly established a warm rapport - and some likely wanted to see her for counseling.
Both Connie and Joe retired in 2018 and enjoyed traveling throughout the United States. Favorite vacation spots were Blackberry Farms in Tennessee and group tours with Tauck to states in the Northeast and Northwest parts of the nation. Vancouver, Victoria, Boston, and Bar Harbor, Maine were special favorites.
Connie did volunteer work for Meals for the Elderly and the Methodist Assistance Program and Food Pantry. The clients always looked forward to seeing her. Ten minutes of assistance followed by thirty minutes of listening to their story. Clients always gave a hug and a “God bless you” in leaving.
Connie was preceded in death by her parents and older brother Bobby, who died at age three from pneumonia. She is survived by her husband of forty years, Joe Jeffers, stepchildren Christopher Jeffers and Jill Schrank and step-grandchildren Tanner and Grayson Schrank and Alice and Nolan Jeffers; her sister JoAnn Erickson and husband Mike, niece Ashley and nephew Michael and their families in Michigan, as well as an extended family in the Bay City, Michigan area.
A special thanks goes out to the employees of Hospice of San Angelo who made Connie’s last days more comfortable. Their dedication, professionalism, and loving touch qualify them for membership in the “earthbound angels club”.
Connie loved her God, her First Methodist Global Church, her Sunday School class Bayith Fellowship, her family, and her husband and best friend Joe. She also loved the great state of Texas. Connie was proud to participate in our church’s discernment and disaffiliation process as a member of the Discernment Committee. Her research was invaluable.
Joe commented that his feelings were best expressed by Kris Kristofferson, in his song, “Loving Her Was Easier than anything I’ll ever do again.” Joe concluded, “She taught me how to live and she taught me how to die - with grace, love, courage, and a giving heart.”
Her Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, March 9th at 1:00 pm in the First Methodist Church Sanctuary located at 37 East Beauregard Avenue, San Angelo, Texas.
Memorials can be given to the Methodist Assistance/Food Pantry, Hospice of San Angelo, and Meals for the Elderly.
