George, born in San Angelo in 1934 was the 6th of 7 children born to Mary and Theo Alexander both of whom were immigrants from Greece.
George was raised in San Angelo and attended Santa Rita Elementary. He grew up in a bilingual household (his mother did not speak any English) and helped in the kitchen of his father’s restaurant “Liberty Café” later known to many as “Alexander’s”. His older brothers started a home building business in 1938, and he began working with his brothers in 1948 at the age of fourteen. After graduating from San Angelo High School in 1953, he joined the Corp of Cadets at Texas A&M University. A member of the Class of ‘57, George received his degree in Petroleum Engineering. George served in the Air Force as an interceptor controller and was stationed at Perin AFB in Sherman, Texas.
He moved back to San Angelo in 1962 to raise his family. George joined his brothers as a partner in the family construction business. Together, the brothers built over a thousand homes in San Angelo under the name of Alexander Homes. Also, George and his brothers were involved with the development of the Southland Park subdivision. The Alexander brothers’ vision was to change the growth pattern of San Angelo toward the Southwest. They, along with other partners, developed Knickerbocker Road from Jackson Street to Southland Park. For over 40 years, George served as a Managing Partner of Alexander Construction Company and as a Co-Trustee of Southland Park of San Angelo. In addition to his brothers and family, he partnered with many investors/developers over the years and always gave due credit to his loyal partners and friends.
Over the years, he has assisted and/or served on the board of directors of many non-profit groups, such as West Texas Rehabilitation Center, the Salvation Army, Rio Concho Manor, the San Angelo Nature Center, San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts, and the Home Builders Association. Additionally, George served on the San Angelo City Zoning Board of Adjustments as well as served as the first president of the City of San Angelo Development Corporation. George served on the board of directors for the San Angelo Community Medical Center and was a founding Trustee, past-president and advisory director of the San Angelo Health Foundation. In 2002 George was selected as the San Angelo Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year.
