Fr. James Hademenos, Ph.D. was born on June 14, 1931, in Houston, Texas, to George and Angelliki Hademenos. He passed away Monday, January 30, 2023, at his home in San Angelo, surrounded by family. The middle of three children, his older brother was Pete Hademenos and his younger sister was Callie Hademenos, both of Houston. James grew up in Houston and graduated from Reagan High School in 1950. Immediately following, James entered the US Navy to serve in the Korean War, becoming a Radarman 3rd Class Petty Officer on the USS Fessenden. He was honorably discharged in November 1954. James continued his education, earning a Bachelor of Science in mathematics and physics at University of Houston in 1954, a Masters of Science in physics from University of South Dakota, Vermillion in 1966, and a Doctorate in physics from Syracuse University, New York in 1970.
On March 4, 1962, James married the love of his life, Constance Peet. They were blessed with two sons, George and Nick, and a daughter Angela. The family moved to San Angelo in 1970 where James began his tenure as an Associate Professor in the Department of Education at Angelo State University. In 1973 he became Department Chair of the Department of Education and remained in that position for 38 years until his retirement in 2008. In 1988, James became a Greek Orthodox priest, serving the San Angelo community at Assumption of the Virgin Mary Orthodox Church until 2013. James’s favorite pastime was traveling. He remained eternally enchanted by the sea, spending his later years on cruises, visiting over 20 different countries.
James was a beloved family member and cherished friend to many. He is preceded in death by his parents and siblings. He is survived by his wife, Constance Hademenos, George and his wife Kelly Hademenos, Nick and his wife Dorie Hademenos, daughter Angela Dunham, and four grandchildren, Alexandra, Jimmy, Sophia, and Raiden. Trisagion Service will be at 7:30pm on Thursday, February 09 at the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Friday, February 10, at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church. Burial, with military honors, will follow in Fairmount Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Assumption Greek Orthodox Church.
