He was born in Bonham, Texas, to Elijah Steward and Roxie Maude Hawkins, and had two older brothers, Steward Hawkins, Jr. ("Jr.") and Cleotis O'Dell Hawkins, all of whom have predeceased him. Harvey met the love of his life, Garlene Neill, and they married in Clovis, New Mexico on March 19, 1953. They would have celebrated 69 years of marriage next week.
When Harvey was 18 years old, he started working for Santa Fe Railroad. In 1950, he was drafted to the United States Army and served until 1952 with part of his service being stationed in Germany. When he returned from Germany he continued his employment with Santa Fe Railroad in Slaton, Texas, until 1958 when he moved to San Angelo. He worked with his father and brother at Hawkins Battery Shop for 31 years. Harvey then opened Angelo Battery and retired after five years. He and Garlene then worked for KOA and traveled and worked in parks all over the United States for 12 years where they met many life-long friends.
In 2007 they returned to San Angelo where Harvey (at 80 years of age) began working for O'Reilly's Auto Parts until he was 88 years old. He and Garlene have three children and their spouses - Jolena (Charlie) Miller, Roxy (Alan) Doty, and Ray (Lisette) Hawkins. He had eight grandchildren - Brad, Aschley, Brandy, Megan, Whitney, Chris, Briana, and Shayna, and 20 great-grandchildren ranging in ages from 20 years to 4 months.
He is survived by his wife, Garlene, his three children, 8 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and his special dog "Diego". He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Doris Motl and Marilyn Hawkins, along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was a life-long member of the San Angelo Jaycees and was a Jaycee International Senator. He was a member of Paulann Baptist Church. He will be remembered for his jokes, hunting and fishing, rattlesnake hunting, bar-b-queing with his special sauce, traveling in his motor home, and he and Garlene loved to play the slot machines. He never met a stranger and seemed to know someone in every town he traveled.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, March 12, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. at Harper Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to a favorite charity. Hawk's favorite quote was: "The secret to a happy life is hard work and true love.”
