Steven Paul Hill, age 65, was welcomed home by his Heavenly Father on October 20, 2021. His mansion was finally finished and awaited his arrival. Upon arrival, every last detail was set to his liking even down to his glass of tea and an occasional Diet Coke.
Steve was born March 24, 1956 in Hobbs, NM. He spent his early years moving from place to place with a military step father and mom. His high school years were spent in San Angelo. After graduation from high school in 1974, he joined the United States Navy. Steve played football for the navy. He was a natural born athlete and excelled in every sport he participated in. Of course, he wasn’t much of a water skier, a little too top heavy for that one. After several attempts on the boat’s part, it finally pulled him up. After his 4 years in the navy, he returned to San Angelo where he met Dana his wife of 36 years. They married in 1985. Four years later, they had a beautiful daughter, Lauren Kendall. From the moment he laid eyes on this gift, his heart melted. He was so proud of her.
In 1981 Steve joined the San Angelo Fire Department. He loved serving his community and did so for 26 years. He made so many close bonds with his fellow firefighters. Steve always found time for his hobbies like softball, team roping, and of course hunting.
After retirement he began working for the Browns at Encino Ranch. This became his passion and it showed in all he did out there. Somewhere somehow he picked up the nickname “Lead Dawg” which stuck from that day on. Someone once said “unless you’re the Lead Dawg, the scenery never changes.” That definitely was Steve. He had a tremendous strength and honor along with a love for animals. He had a work ethic like no other.
In 2014, Lauren married Chase Vance and finally he got his long awaited “son” in law. The two of them became really close over the years. Steve loved his family. He also had another family, which was all of his “Louisiana brothers” along with a few northerners thrown in there. They each had a special place in his heart.
Things won’t be the same when the leaves begin to change, hunting season rolls around, and the Lead Dawg’s place is vacant. We will all miss his unbeatable grilling masterpieces. Especially those steaks! We cannot forget his one of a kind sense of humor. I’m sure somehow he will continue to guide us all from above and point each one of us to our true calling to serve our Heavenly Father.
Steve was preceded in death by his father, Robert Fell, and his father-in-law, Robert Kellar. Left behind is his wife, Dana, daughter and son-in-law, Lauren and Chase Vance. Along with his 4 fur babies. Two in particular who never left his side, Duncan and Atticus.
We will miss you, my love. Until we meet again.
Funeral service will be held on Monday, October 25, 2021, at 10:00am, at Freedom Fellowship Church. Burial to follow at Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are under direction of Harper Funeral Home.
