Reverend Edward A. Lopez, 63 years old from San Angelo, Texas, passed away on Saturday, August 21, 2021. Edward was a man of profound faith, with a spirit of forgiveness, compassion in abundance and a faithful servant of the community. He was a man who wholeheartedly loved the Lord. His favorite pastimes were cheering for the Central High Bobcats, Texas Longhorns, Houston Texans, Dallas Cowboys, and the Texas Rangers.
Reverend Lopez served in the ministry for 34 years. His final sermon was given on Sunday, July 25, 2021, at River City Baptist Church where he was serving as pastor. For several years, he was also the CEO of the Boys and Girls Club of San Angelo. In addition, he served as Chaplain for San Angelo Police Department for 10 years and a chaplain for San Gabriel’s Hospice. Reverend Lopez won copious awards and accolades from the community he loved serving.
Reverend Lopez was the happiest in his life when he met his wife, Maria M. Martinez, she brought him true joy and a wonderful daughter, Alexi Martinez.
He leaves behind his loving wife, his daughter, and his mother, Belia A. Benitez. He is survived by his four siblings, Sylvia Bauchman (Gary) from New York, Nelda Garcia (David), Robert Lopez (Tiffanie) and Brenda Izaguirre (Honorable Edgar Izaguirre) all from Austin, Texas. He also leaves behind two nieces (Dr. Alyson D. Garcia, M.D. (Dax Brannan) and Anyssa Lopez-Moya), four nephews (Kristopher Lopez (Jordan), Caleb Garcia, Alex Moya-Lopez, and Christian Panter), two great-nieces (Nelda Faye Lopez and Zara Brynn Brannan) and one great-nephew (Titus Dax Brannan).
He is preceded in death by his father, Domingo C. Lopez and his stepdad, Arturo G. Benitez.
His life was dedicated in service to others, never met a stranger and had an infectious laugh which will be missed.
Reverend Lopez believed in the Lord and in medicine. He was fully vaccinated but COVID-19 ravaged his lungs and kidneys due to others not exhibiting the same wisdom. The family wants to thank Shannon Hospital COVID-19 ICU staff for the excellent care given with a special appreciation to Dr. Wood and Emily (Emy) Emmons, RN.
