Aubrey Ray Ivey, 94, passed away on January 1, 2021. Aubrey Ray Ivey was born in Bronte, Texas on June 4, 1926 to Raymond Henry Bart Ivey and Amma Jane Whitaker Ivey. He grew up in a farming family in Sherwood, Texas and graduated from Mertzon High School in 1943. After graduating from High school he went to work for West Texas Utilities Company in Dalhart. In 1944 he joined the Navy and served in San Diego, California aboard ship for 16 months as a deep sea diver and ship electrician. He was a Gyro Compass Technician, second class diver and a first class Gully officer in the Navy in WWII. After his discharge in 1946 he returned home and married the love of his life, Lenora Katherine Loftin from Mertzon. He returned to his job at WTU and together, they lived in Dalhart, Crowell, Vernon and Big Lake until Ray retired from WTU in June of 1988. At that time they moved back to Mertzon, Texas to be near their family.
Ray loved his family more than anything and spent his life serving his family and spending time with them. He loved hunting and fishing and helping “Teenie” cook elaborate family dinners.
Ray is preceded in death by his wife, Katherine “Teenie” Loftin Ivey, siblings, Virginia Kiser and Chester Ivey, and his Grandaughter, Angie Dolan Gryder. Ray is survived by two daughters, Linda Arms and husband Bill Arms of Mertzon, Kathy Dolan and husband Mike Dolan of Mertzon, Grandaughters Lashaunn Bold and husband Ray Bold of Arlington, Michelle Rushing and Shannon Rushing of Mertzon, four great grandsons, Carson Bold, Dolan Rushing, Bradley Gryder and Riley Gryder as well as several nieces and nephews.
Ray was a member of the First Christian Church of Big Lake and transferred membership to the First Christian Church of Mertzon in 1988 when he retired. He was a member of the Big Lake Reagan county school board, the volunteer fire department and the Big Lake Lion’s Club. He is dearly loved and greatly missed.
