Charles Wesley Owens, Jr., 94, died Friday, November 6, 2020 “slipping the surly bonds of earth”.
He was born December 17, 1925, to Hazel Eggsware Owens and Charles W. Owens and was raised by grandmother Eva Bridge in Bennington, VT.
Charles volunteered at an early age for military service with his grandmother’s reluctant consent, serving 20 years during war and peacetime in many parts of the world. He achieved his dream and goal to become a pilot and flew many types of planes, his favorite being the F-100. He taught many cadets to fly B-25’s at GAFB.
Charles retired to San Angelo and was a DJ for KGKL, teacher at San Angelo Business College, and a banker. He oversaw the installation of the first ATM machine in San Angelo at West Side Bank.
He was a member of the American Legion, Masons, Concho Scottish Rite, Legion of Honor and Sojourners.
He is survived by wife, Barbara of 63 years, son Michael and wife Patty, son Keith and wife Julee, and daughter Cynthia Nixon, grandchildren, Tiffany Owens, Haley Anne Nixon and Aaron Robert Nixon.
He is preceded in death by his son-in-law, the late Robert Nixon, Jr.
Due to COVID-19, a memorial service will be held at a later date. If desired, memorials may be made to a charity of your choice or Emmanuel Episcopal Church where Charles will rest.
