Billie Maxine Simmons was born Feb. 1, 1935 at home in Locksburg, Ark. To Rufus Odell and LouElla Crawford Simmons. She was the youngest of four children Neida Faye, Elda Mae and Odean. The family moved to Huber Texas in 1939. From there to Hawkins in 1941, where they lived in the Humble camp. Moved to Mexia in 1949, then to McCamey in 1950.
There Billie met the love of her life and married Aug 2, 1952. They left the same night for California, where Billy Roe Currey was in the Navy. When Bill returned after boot camp he was sent to Whibey Island, Washington. Their first child was born while they were there, Nita Maxine Currey. Bill was sent back to San Diego, California in December 1954. The family lived in Ocean Beach California when Bill was sent on sea duty. Their son Douglas was born in Crane Texas. Billie went back to McCamey so she could be with family .
Billie came to Big Lake in 1962 with two young children, Nita and Douglas Currey. When she first came to Big Lake her mother and father lived there as well. Her and her mother opened the Village Café. They had the only car hop service in town. That lasted for about a year. After that she worked at the Steak House, then later for Jess and Von Dean at Jesses Steak House. Both of her children bussed tables in the summer. She worked for several other places. Aubry Edward, B's Body Shop, Tommy Hayes gasoline, Jo Lusby Ins. , Ace Motors, Big Lake Welding, Big lake State Bank in 1967 that later changed owners and name to Reagan State Bank. Where she served as Vice President. She was there until 1980. She also worked in the Reagan County Tax Office and was the Director of the Activity Center when she retired in 2002. She was a member of the First Baptist Church since 1979.
Big Lake has wonderful people, acquaintances, friends and family. She had received honors for Masonic Lodge, Community Building and she was Citizen of the year in 1993. She was also a member of the garden club, which was her favorite past time.
She was preceded in death by: Lou Ella Simmons (mother), Rufus O'dell Simmons (father), Douglas Currey (son), Tina Currey (daughter in law), Kimberly Currey (granddaughter), Faye Yockum (sister), May Puckett (sister).
She is survived by: Dean Simmons (brother) and wife Charline Simmons, Nita Schubert (daughter), Cody Schubert (grandson), Cassidy Serna (granddaughter) and Frankie Serna (husband) and Alycia, Derek and Breanna Serna (great grandchildren). Also arriving in December, great grandson Quinton Wayne Serna.
