Another gift was called home as Heavens gates opened for Joan Poulter Cozby, 87, who passed gracefully holding her Daughter’s hand, on December 25, 2014, claiming her promise of Everlasting Life. Viewing will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday December 29, 2014 at Robert Massie Funeral Home. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, December 30, 2014 at Robert Massie Riverside Chapel, with burial to follow at Fairmount Cemetery.
Joan was born on September 16, 1927 in Ardmore, Oklahoma to parents Charlie T. and Lorena Wall Poulter. Shortly after her birth, the family moved to San Angelo. She grew up in San Angelo and went on to attend McMurray University where she obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Music. Joan was an accomplished pianist and had a wonderful voice.
She lived in several cities, including Childress, Roscoe, Ganado, and Sanderson. Joan moved to California and then returned to San Angelo in 1980. She retired from SAISD in 1994 after 28 years of teaching. Joan was also very active in the Business Man’s Bible Class, with her father and brothers. In later years, she enjoyed the daily commitment of West Texas ranching with her brothers.
Joan met and married Curtis Cozby in 1981; they enjoyed 33 years of marriage, while traveling extensively, sharing quiet times, reminiscing with and about family, friends and teammates of Curtis’ days of coaching football.
Joan is preceded in death by her parents, her brothers CJ and George Poulter, all longtime residents of San Angelo.
Joan is survived by her husband Curtis Cozby and her daughter Kimberly Ann Hatem of San Angelo, her son Charles Paul Hatem of Everett, Washington, nephew Michael Poulter and wife Patricia, niece Rene Bingham and husband Bobby, step-son Lynn Cozby and wife Olga, of Devine, along with numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, many dear friends and Joan’s “Baby”, Rusty, her apricot toy poodle.
Pallbearers will include Marcus Young, James Burnes, Donald Boyd Cox, Don Stacy, Tom Brady and Joe Jeffers.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a charitable donation be made in memory of Joan to the San Angelo Retired Teachers Scholarship Fund, c/o Sue Taylor, 3214 Forest Hill, San Angelo, TX 76904 or to your favorite charity.
The family would like to express a special thank you to all the nursing staff and caregivers of the Rotary House of Hope, the attending staff of Interim Healthcare/Hospice, Dr. Peter Chang and to everyone that touched Joan’s life during her stay at the House of Hope.
