Sharla Lee, 89, died Sunday, November 9, 2014 in San Angelo. At her request there will be no service.
Sharla was born November 16, 1924 in Ft. Worth to Josephine Sandlin Bowden and Charles Davis Bowden, and grew up in Brownwood. She graduated from Lohn High School in 1941, and attended Howard Payne, Texas Christian and North Texas State universities, studying music and art.
Always a free spirit, Sharla played piano professionally at the University Club in Dallas, at Joe DiMaggio's restaurant in the San Francisco Bay Area and aboard cruise ships on the USS Presidents line. She was pianist for President John F. Kennedy's aboard-ship memorial service on the USS Roosevelt following the assassination on November 22, 1963.
She worded at Camp Bowie, a military post in Brownville during WWII and was named Miss Bowie of 1944 in a camp-wide photo competition judged by Yank Magazine editors.
Sharla moved from Sun City, AZ to Sagecrest Alzheimer's Care Center's newly built Allison House in San Angelo in April 16, 2008. Her keyboard was set up in the house's open area where she enjoyed playing for residents, staff and guests.
She was named a "Elder Shahbaz" for her volunteer assistance to staff in Allison House during the early days of her stay there.
Survivors include her sisters, Shirley Alford of San Angelo and Margaret Page of Pleasanton, CA; nephews, Joe Alford and Jim Alford, both of San Angelo; a special cousin, Judith Faber of San Angelo; a special friend, Joseph Kasales Jr. of Arlington; her Sagecrest-Allison House family; numerous cousins, nephews, nieces and friends.
