Thursday, a 25-year-old San Angelo man, Robert McCoy, stood in front of Judge Jay Weatherby at the Tom Green County Courthouse to face the charge of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, a second-degree felony. He accepted a plea bargain for deferred adjudication in lieu of a trial for attacking another man with a cocktail glass at Midnight Rodeo in Apr. 2015.
According to the probable cause affidavit, the victim of the assault, Trevor Begnoche, said he saw his ex-girlfriend near the front door of the bar and went over and gave her a hug. Robert McCoy wasn’t pleased with this and started a verbal altercation with Begnoche. At some point, Begnoche told McCoy to shut up.
With that, the affidavit reported McCoy slammed a cocktail glass across the left side of Begnoche’s head.
An off-duty Sheriff’s Deputy, Sgt. Jason Corbell, working security, was called to the front door where the deputy reported seeing Begnoche holding a rag over a large gash on the left side of his head with more cuts near the victim’s left eyebrow. In addition, the deputy saw blood and glass on the ground. While attempting to calm the crowd at the scene, Deputy Corbell saw several witnesses pointing at McCoy as the one who assaulted Begnoche.
Begnoche was rushed to Shannon Medical Center for stitches after requesting the deputies press charges. Three female witnesses pointed at McCoy as the one who assaulted Begnoche.
Deputy Chris Duerstine noted that Bognoche’s injuries were serious and will leave permanently disfiguring scars.
In response to these charges, McCoy accepted deferred adjudication for his actions on the night of Apr. 3, 2015. He was ordered to commit to five years of community supervision and to pay restitution of $4,322.64.

PermalinkThis is just another sad situation in San Angelo that clearly establishes a "weak" judicial system and "incompetency" on the part of our local Judges. This is the exact type of behavior in this City that none of our Judges should condone! "You do the crime, you do the time!," period! I'm not choosing sides with either of these parties as violence brews in a "bar" environment. However, based on information provided by the writer of this column, witnesses clearly acknowledged that Robert McCoy assaulted Trevor Begnoche, the alleged victim with the intent of inflicting severe injury. Time after time, the Judicial system in San Angelo demonstrates the inability to administer strong sentencing needed to send a clear message that this behavior will not be tolerated. Folks, San Angelo, TX is no longer a safe community and this needs to change! We have a Police Department that lacks sufficient Police Officers to reduce crime and our City Government will not do anything about it. Shame on our City Council and Judge Jay Weatherby, shame on you for being such a "WEENIE" in your decision. Citizens of San Angelo, if this judge is up for re-election, he should be replaced, no questions asked. San Angel, TX needs strong Judges who are not afraid to administer harsh and just punishment to those who perpetrate criminal offenses in our community! Elections are right around the corner, so let's fix this problem once and for all! WAKE UP CITIZENS OF SAN ANGELO, TX, THE COCKROACHES ARE TAKING OVER AND IT IS TIME TO EXTERMINATE THEM!!!
