Police Use Taser to Subdue Unruly Violator of Burn Ban

A San Angelo citizen was subdued by a Taser after fighting with police who were enforcing the city-wide burn ban.

At 2:51 p.m., on Feb. 3, San Angelo police officers were dispatched to the 900 block of Koberlin for an illegal burn. William Vancamp, 49, was open burning personal property on the ground in the backyard, which is ia violation of City of San Angelo Ordinances. Officers attempted to speak with Vancamp about the Ordinance violation, but Vancamp physically fought with police as he attempted to retreat into his house. Police first attempted to physically restrain and then handcuff Vancamp, but the physical struggle intensified, increasing the danger to police.

If Vancamp was allowed to retreat into his house, police were concerned he could retrieve a weapon, and pose a safety risk to police and himself.

In order to gain control the situation, police used a Taser to subdue Vancamp.

Vancamp was handcuffed, placed under arrest then booked into Tom Green County Jail on the charges of Fire Code Open Burning and Interfering with Public Duties of a Police Officer.

Other violations of those booked into the Tom Green County Jail included:

  • Criminal Trespass – 3
  • Resist Arrest Search or Transport – 1

I guess that technically your headline was correct, but this ordinance bans burning, and is always the law. Not a temporary burn ban, correct?
