There were 18 vehicle accidents last night within the city limits of San Angelo, according to the police blotter. Most of the accidents occurred on Loop 306 and the Houston-Harte Expressway.
A Sterling City ambulance overturned and caught fire just north of Grape Creek last night at around 2 a.m. It was inbound to Shannon Medical Center.
According to radio traffic, the Grape Creek Volunteer Fire Department tended to the overtuned ambulance with three volunteer units. The fire may have been intense because radio traffic warned that the volunteer's units may run out of water. A San Angelo Fire Department pumper truck was dispatched to assist. But the volunteers soon took control of the blaze and the San Angelo assistance was turned back. Volunteers had trouble opening the ambulance after the fire was out. The accident happened at the 12000 block of U.S. 87 North.
Later, at 4:40 a.m. another vehicle roll-over happened along that same stretch of highway at the 7400 block.
