At a little past 10 a.m. Friday morning, San Angelo Police were dispatched to the Fairmount Cemetery for an unknown problem, Officer D. Martin said; however, police scanners indicated a possible dead body at the scene.
When they arrived at the Cemetery, the groundskeepers told Police they noticed the subject when they started driving around to complete their normal morning routine. That’s when they saw a bike leaning against one of the commercial buildings located behind the Cemetery.
“They [also] observed some feet up on the roof from a distance, and [the individual] wasn’t moving,” Martin said.
At that point, the groundskeepers thought the individual dead, so they called Police.
When SAPD officers went to the building, they noticed the bike and the individual’s feet as well, and they tried to get the person’s attention. When they received no response, they got a ladder and began to climb the roof. At that point, the individual, a man in his late 20s or early 30s, came to and Police ordered him down.
Martin said that male subject, who he would not name, only had the bike, and they didn’t find any contraband in the backpack he carried. He found his way on top of the building at 5:30 a.m. to rest.
“The subject is a transient and just wanted to find a safe place to sleep,” Martin added.
Although the transient showed no signs of attempting to burglarize the business, the business owner has requested criminal charges filed against the transient; therefore, Police arrested the man for criminal trespassing.

How about offer to buy the guy a meal, instead of throwing him in a cage and saddling him with fines & fees he obviously can't afford? San Angelo holds itself up as a very Christian community, but it's apparent over & over that's simply not the case when it comes to the poorest among us.

PermalinkI agree. I don't see why they had to charge him. He had to be pretty desperate to sleep in a cemetery. Praying that this young man will find a job, and a home. What happened to that group of people who were suppose to find solutions to San Angelo homeless problems?

PermalinkOh!! I can't forget big idiot!! I'm sorry I left you out!! That's what's wrong with todays society! Nobody wants to give people the benefit of the doubt! So while your in your air conditioned home relaxing and criticizing people, remember that not everybody is as fortunate as you! Or maybe they are!! Maybe they aren't idiots!

PermalinkOn a serious note, how many police officers does it take to apprehend a harmless, homeless person and book him into jail? The immediate photo shows 3 officers and two Tahoes on scene. Seems a bit overkill....

PermalinkBrandy,
How about a follow up story on this guy. I'd be especially interested in finding out what happened to the bike - looks as if it was his only possession. Did he steal it from someone? If not, was it stolen from him by the city?
Whoever insisted on the trespassing charge is an asshole
