One Dead in Crash at Landfill

San Angelo Police have confirmed that a 67-year-old man died this afternoon in a crash at the San Angelo landfill.

Police responded to the crash at 4:06 p.m., where they learned that the elderly man and an 11-year-old boy had been at the landfill dropping off trash and were attempting to leave when the crash occurred.

According to witnesses, as the man drove out of the gated area he veered off to the right, then suddenly veered to the left, colliding with the back left quarter of a Republic Services truck.

When police arrived on scene, the man had succumbed to his injuries and died. An 11-year-old male passenger was transported to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries. Police were attempting to extract the deceased driver from his vehicle into the early evening.

As of yet, the man has not been identified, and the investigation is ongoing.

The San Angelo man who died at the City Landfill has been identified as 67-year-old Charles Price Braden. Justice of the Peace J.P. McGuire has ruled the cause of death as medical and not criminal in nature, according to a SAPD press release.

Based on witness statements and evidence at the scene, it appeared Braden had a medical emergency while driving away from the trash dump area in the landfill. Officials said when this occurred, that's when Braden swerved and crashed into a Republic Services truck that was on its way to the dumping area.

Poor man likely suffered a heat stroke or heart attack from unloading trash that Republic used to pick up.

It seems like Republic's been in the news a lot lately. None of it good. How many more injuries will this trash contract cause?

Condolences to the family. I hope the boy is doing alright.
