Friday evening, a two-year-old toddler, identified as Treswawn Marquveis Collins of San Angelo, drowned at Lake Nasworthy, and the San Angelo Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division is continuing its investigation.
Just before 9:30 p.m. that evening, beachgoers alerted nearby lake police officers to the drowning at Mary E. Lee Beach. According to a press release provided by SAPD, a lake officer immediately entered the water and attempted to search for the toddler manually while other officials prepared a watercraft device for deployment. San Angelo Fire Department personnel also aided with the search.
Police located and recovered the toddler after about 50 minutes with the assistance of Sonar and special recovery equipment; however, the child showed no signs of life.
Justice of the Peace Eddie Howard responded and pronounced Collins dead by drowning, and the toddler’s body was sent to Lubbock for autopsy; results are pending. The drowning appeared to be accidental.
Originally, witnesses at the beach told officers Collins slipped off a floatation device and into the water after his parents, who accompanied the toddler on the lake, began to experience swimming difficulty. They were reported to be several yards away from the shoreline and nearby kayakers assisted them to shore.
Because this is an ongoing investigation, no further information is available at this time.

i honestly cannot wrap my head around the fact that the parent/parents knew that they weren't strong swimmers yet they were almost to the deepest point near the drop off with their 2 year old child in a floatation device that late into the evening?! I mean.....a responsible parent/parents would have stayed close to the beach with their child and/or have left before dusk/dark. i just do not understand why people are becoming so careless with children. I have 3 kids of my own and i'm also a strong swimmer but even i don't take my kids in water that is past my hips with floaties. this is a sad story and my heart goes to the family but i still believe that the parent/parents were very irresponsible.

PermalinkSo now the mother is claiming that she was on the raft/floatie with the child and the father, knowing she couldn't swim, pushed them into deeper water and refused to help them.
