DPS Pursues Red Ford Mustang in High Speed Chase Through San Angelo

Texas Department of Public Safety officer Ram Garza attempted to pull over a red Ford Mustang in a routine traffic stop near the San Angelo Police station in San Angelo when the male driver of the Mustang decided to drive off at a high rate of speed, according to Shawn Baxter, spokeman for this region's DPS.

At a point along the chase, witnesses say the Mustang driver threw a handgun out the window (pictured above).

The DPS chased the Mustang through the east part of town, apparently down Pulliam St. and then out east on Paint Rock Rd. Somewhere in the vicinity of Paint Rock Rd. east of Loop 306, the driver fled his vehicle and a manhunt is now underway.

Details as they happen.

Update 5:58 p.m.

Two eyewitnesses at the Electric Rider shop on Pulliam describe the chase and how the driver of the Mustang allegedly threw a handgun out the window into their parking lot.

Update 6:09 p.m. - The manhunt is underway in this area. Roads are closed off. K-9 units are involved.

Update 6:22 p.m. - Approximately a dozen police vehicles are parked out here, and the officers are involved in an on-foot manhunt. It appears that the driver of the Mustang left a trail of evidence in his getaway from the vehicle.

Update 6:22 p.m. - I incorrectly wrote "Grape Creek Rd." where is should say "Paint Rock Rd." The story is updated to reflect this.

Update 6:50 p.m. - The suspect is still at large. Police are urging caution, explaining that although the suspect threw away one gun, they are not sure if he is still armed with more weapons.

Update 7:05 p.m. - DPS Officer Byron Martin said that the chase originated from a routine traffic stop. The Mustang driver took off northbound on Bell St. and DPS pursued. The Mustang led DPS out Paint Rock Rd. where the driver fled on foot. The driver is still at large.

Update Feb. 8, 8:00 a.m. - We have reports of a manhunt near the Paul Ann area in northeast San Angelo at approximately 3:30 a.m. Helicopters were used. We are attempting to find out if this was connected with yesterday's high-speed chase and manhunt.

Update Feb 8, 7:30 p.m. - We have confirmed that the 3:30 a.m. manhunt was successful and that suspect is now in custody. We do not believe that this manhunt was related to the red Mustang driver. As far as we can determine as of right now, the red Mustang driver is still at large.

Unfortunately, the suspect has not yet been found. The area has been thoroughly searched, however the area is expansive which makes apprehension difficult. The suspect is believed to have removed his shirt in flight (we found it hanging on a tree) and is believed not to be well-dressed for the weather. Several items were found in the area that are believed to have been discarded, however a cell phone was not among them, so he could have called someone to pick him up. Police are advising caution for residents of the area, since the suspect was armed with at least one weapon, which he discarded. Whether or not he is carrying additional weapons is unknown.

Mr.Richardson aka Stephen Wolf, you haven had one to many tonight. Just like many nights.....Go to sleep and quit making a fool of urself...lol

Mr. Richardson, I am not opposed to you posting your opinions on our page--we, in fact, encourage that--however, I would appreciate if you would keep your comments decent, grounded and mature. An update on a situation as serious as this one is not the forum for name-calling and expressing your discontent with our staff. If you would like to formally discuss any of the issues you may have with any of our team, you can gladly come by our office. Please contact any of us via email to set up an appropriate time. Thank you.

Ms. Schmid you have no objections to the libelous comments and personal insults posted against me so obviously you have no interest in common decency. Only a total fool would take the "news" reporting at San Angelo Live seriously. Big deal you listen to a police radio.

Dummy!!! Your fixing to get banned.....oh forgot. You also use Stephen Wolf. You have done itnow...
SAST blocked him long ago for this same inappropriate behavior, if all you need is my blessing in order to do the same here... you may proceed. Chelsea, thank you for doing a fantastic job on here and Thank the creators for bringing this alternative news source to San Angelo. For what it's worth, I cancelled my SAST subscription and gave the guy 2 reasons for doing so when he asked, (1) that their rates were going up in price once again and the news service they provide isn't worth 98% of what the charge, (2) if they wanted to be a real news service, try logging on to San Angelo Live and observe what "real reporters" are capable of.... Thank you all once again for jobs well done !!!!

It is because of people like OmyMyGosh/Doctor Do Hickey/Buckshot that hide behind a computer screen and post personal insults that everyone left gosanangelo and now they are trying to do the same thing here. Shortly after the hiring of "Ken Grimm" to head the gosanangelo web site hate filled comments discriminating against "Mexicans," "Blacks," "Women" and "legal immigrants" by posters hiding behind pseudonyms became the norm. Anyone who objected was banned by Ken Grimm. I took out a trial subscription with the San Angelo Standard Times ands did not continue the subscription because of problems with their web site. I was not able to access the on line version of the paper so why pay? Scripps Howard sent me an e--mail inviting me back and offering me a subscription for $4.99 per month. I declined. If San Angelo Live is not going to require posters to use their real names than it is not worth reading.

You are welcome to come down here in person and describe your wonderful ideas. We're at 36 W. Beauregard on the 6th floor.

Joe

I read the news for the news, not the inane comments from the Peanut Gallery. Join a message board where you can talk about anything you want. People have all kinds of reasons for not using their real name. Mine is a privacy concern and I am not running for office so I don't need the free publicity. It's really easy to use a false name on the S-T website as well, so lose the fake concern. This is not your personal forum.
Just wondering if there are any updates on this matter.Did they get him? I notice SAST and KLST haven't reported anything. Im just really wanting to know because it was all happening across the street from us last night.
