Abandoned Home on Pulliam in San Angelo Goes Up in Flames

A house on the 500 block of Pulliam Street was engulfed in flames just before noon Saturday according to witnesses at the scene. Sherri Adams, who lives a half block away and across the street said,  “I smelled smoke inside my house, and [my house] is a thick brick house, and the fire was a half block away. ”

“I came out here and I saw all the smoke on the block and I couldn’t tell where the fire was, then I saw the flames of the fire rising way above that house there” she said.

Joe Nandin was showing his orange Chevrolet truck to Geno Candella in his front yard across the street when they saw the flames growing out of the house’s roof. “Me and Geno we were just talking about the truck and Geno turned around and said ‘Hey man look at that!’

“The house had been vacant for about seven years, Nadin said.

“The fire department got here pretty fast. The police got here first and then the fire trucks arrived,” Nadin said.

The neighbor next door was concerned that the flames would cause harm to her home. “The house wasn’t livable,” she said, referring to the empty structure as a blight on the neighborhood.  Neighboring homes were not damaged by flames, although both sides were engulfed in a large volume of smoke. Strong, gusting winds could have spread the blaze if the San Angelo Fire Department had not arrived as quickly as they did. Winds were 17 m.p.h out of the southwest at noon.

“I’m very happy with San Angelo’s finest taking care of it. As soon as I smelled the smoke, I could hear the sirens coming,” Adams said.

The 911 call for the fire was recorded by the San Angelo Police at 11:37 a.m. San Angelo Fire Department is investigating the exact cause.
