Road Spikes in Wall End High Speed Chase

A red Nissan 350Z attempted to outrun a DPS Officer Saturday night around 7:00 p.m., reaching speeds of 130+ miles per hour northbound on U.S. 83 just south of Eden, Tx.

The run started south of Eden on US 83, where DPS clocked the vehicle traveling 85 miles per hour and attempted to initiate a stop for speeding. However the driver of the Nissan continued to accelerate. 

The Tom Green County Sheriff's Office sent deputies to assist, ending the chase just west of the Allsup's Convenience Store in Wall. The driver was subsequently arrested. 

The chase began around 7:15 p.m. and DPS called out over the scanner that the vehicle had reached 120 miles per hour. At the highest, the driver of the Nissan sped up to 150 mph, DPS says. At one point during the chase, the DPS officer in pursuit radioed that he couldn't keep up with the Nissan.

The vehicle was slowed by spikes the DPS laid down in front of Allsup's. The car continued moving for some time; Officers say the spikes don't flatten the tires immediately. Finally, the car came to a stop in a field just north of the frontage road.

Thus far, the driver has been charged with resisting arrest and has been transported to Tom Green County Jail.

Update 7:55 p.m.

The vehicle continued approximately 440 yards after hitting the spikes, turned off the highway and onto the frontage road then crashed into a fence pole. 

The airbag was deployed in the crash. The driver was a male and there were no passengers. There were no injuries. 

Update 7:58 p.m.

Witnesses speculate the vehicle may have been modified, noting low profile performance tires. An officer on the scene said he did not believe the vehicle was a factory 350Z.
