A Shoplifter at the Walmart on Sherwood Way led police on a short, high-speed chase into Southland Friday night.
San Angelo police were dispatched to assist Walmart’s “Assets Protection” unit in the store at around 8 p.m. Upon arrival, police saw the shoplifting suspect running across the parking lot and attempted to apprehend him.
Police said that before they could effectively cut the shoplifter off and prevent him from reaching his late model Ford Mustang, he sped off, initiating a high-speed chase.
The Mustang reached Loop 306 and headed eastbound towards College Hills where the Mustang exited. The suspect turned southwest on College Hills, accelerating. By the intersection of Valleyview, the speed was too much for him, and the Mustang spun out-of-control with police right behind.
Police were able to apprehend and arrest the suspect without incident. He was booked for a Class B misdemeanor of shoplifting and a felony evasion charge.
The police haven’t sorted out the traffic citations yet. Police said that the Mustang hit an innocent vehicle on the frontage road of 306 near College Hills during the flight from justice. Luckily, no one was hurt in that crash.
