A San Angelo man was pronounced dead at the crash scene on SH 158 early Monday morning when he rammed his 2013 Chevrolet Sonic into the water-hauling semi-trailer of an 18-wheeler.
According to Texas DPS, a 2007 Volvo truck tractor hauling a water trailer and the Sonic were both westbound on SH 158 when the Sonic crashed into the semi at 6:35 a.m. Monday. As a result of the crash, the Sonic burst into flames.
The driver of the Sonic, Juan L. Ocon, 27, of San Angelo was pronounced dead at the scene by Glascock County Justice of the Peace Kay Machicek. The driver of the 18-wheeler, Eduwiges Marquez Hernandez, 57, was not injured.
DPS said that Ocon failed to control speed and was the primary cause of the crash. The roadway was dry at the crash scene, approximately 14 miles west of Garden City.

Poor guy. I wonder if he fell asleep at the wheel with the cruise control set at a high rate of speed. I guess we will never know.

PermalinkThis guy was my neighbor. The story I got was that he tried to pass the truck, saw an oncoming vehicle and realized he couldn't, pulled back into the lane but was accelerating too fast to avoid the truck. I don't know if that's accurate, but what I heard. He was a good man and a great neighbor. I will miss him.
The lesson here is that it's not worth taking chances. Sure you may be a little late--better than leaving a young family to get by without you.
