A resolution in support of the low income housing project “Outlook on Valleyview” passed 4-3 in a surprising vote this morning.
The resolution was requested by the project developer LDG in order to improve chances of the project receiving government money to build and maintain it. The project is proposed to be located at 2900 Valleyview Blvd. and is offered for sale by Lance Lacy of Lacy and Co. real estate company. Revealed in previous public meetings is that Lacy and Scott Allison are directors of Southland Hills, Inc., who the Tom Green County Appraisal District notes as the owners of the property today.
Mayor Morrison, facing re-election in May, expressed strong opposition to the resolution. Councilman Rodney Fleming, whose SMD 1 district has jurisdiction over where the property is, was outspoken in favor of it.
Hundreds of Southland residents were in council chambers to voice their opposition. Two rose to support the project, including West Texas Organizing Strategy’s Craig Meyers and an assistant in the financial aid department at ASU.
Voting in favor of the resiolution were Councilwoman Liz Grindstaff, Fleming, Councilman Johnny Silvas, and Councilman Don Vardeman.

PermalinkEveryone is created equal - in that we're all meant to be born with 2 arms, 2 legs and a head... and we should all be able to make our own choices/decisions in life. Equality doesn't include entitlement. Economically challenged citizens should not be entitled to piggy back on the same corner of town that the people who have worked HARD to establish it, do.
I can only hope this decision doesn't backfire, in the way that voting President Obama into office has! However... it's my strong opinion that those less privileged tend to have less pride in themselves and less respect in the things and people who belong to them. This housing will start out new, but it will quickly deteriorate into a slum - taking surrounding property value with it.

PermalinkYou got it just right "Big Daddy", the richest of our brothers and sisters would like to keep the poorest away from their nice houses (forget that it's not like they'd even be on the on the same block). We need to mix it, and provide better opportunity. Just remember that better jobs are on that side of town. Proximity matters when it comes to getting a job!
