Firefighters have extinguished a blaze in the 29th St. Walmart parking lot, where a white Ford Bronco had become consumed in flames. Smoke could be seen billowing up from the scene from miles away, however a deft response from the firemen prevented any further spreading.
The vehicle was parked approximately 40 yards from the nearest Murphey's USA gas pump, and vehicles around the blazing Bronco sustained only minor damage. A Nissan Titan parked in front of the vehicle came out unscathed, while a green Silverado next to the Bronco suffered a melted driver's side mirror and some charring along the driver's side.
Firefighters are currently examining the engine compartment and dousing the vehicle with water. The two front tires have blown out and melted, and the cab of the vehicle was also consumed.
No one was injured in the fire.
Update 3:03 p.m.
Shoppers are now flooding the parking lot to look at the seared car parts, as police take witness statements from those nearby. The driver of the Bronco has yet to return to the truck.
Final Update 3:09 p.m.
Witnesses on the scene state that the vehicle was smoking when the driver pulled up. The male driver was speaking on his cell phone at the time, and as the fire grew, the man fled rapidly. Police have ascertained that the vehicle was not stolen, but the driver has yet to be found.
