LIVE!'s Guide to 2014

A few days ago LIVE! compiled a review of 2013, featuring the highlights of the year. In the interest of looking forward, here is a list of some of the things we’re looking forward to in 2014.

Politics

One of the first events to kick the year off is a reception for Drew Darby, the Texas State Representative, hosted by the Boys and Girls Club Jan. 16 at 4:30 pm.  This reception will be held at the South Side facility located at 2762 Ben Ficklin Road, next to Rio Vista School.

Elections

Judge Mike Brown retired in 2013, leaving Steve Floyd, former County Commissioner of Precinct Three, to serve as interim County Judge until elections in May. Richard Easingwood and Steve Floyd, both Republicans, are the only candidates who have filed at this time.

Rick Bacon, who replaced Floyd as Commissioner of Precinct Three, will run against City Councilman Don Vardeman for the Commissioner position.

Aubrey De Cordova is the only candidate in place for his position as Precinct 2 Commissioner, while Precinct 4 Commissioner Bill Ford has a contender in Kenny McCrea.

Primary election early voting is from Feb. 18 to 28, and the main election is May 10.

Weather

The Almanac predicts that San Angelo will have a slightly colder winter and hotter summer than last year, with the year overall expected to be dry.

Events

Of course it wouldn’t be 2014 without the 82nd Annual Stock Show and Rodeo. As one of the nation’s biggest rodeos in term of competitors and purse, it’s the biggest event of the year in San Angelo. Many world champions and other Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association competitors turn out every year, including fan favorites Trevor Brazile and the Cooper Brothers.

This year the rodeo runs three weekends, beginning Feb. 14 and going through March 2.

Other yearly events that San Angelo looks forward to include:

  • The 26th Annual July Pops Concert
  • Drag Boat Races
  • Cinch Shootout
  • San Angelo Wine and Food Festival
  • Taste of San Angelo

The River Fest may also make a comeback

Sports

The Bandits’ Football season is starting up in March and the Colts’ 15th season will begin sometime in May.

Of course there’s the ever-popular multitude of High School sports that will win, lose and have a fantastic time all year.

LIVE! Readers

We asked San Angelo what they were looking forward to and were met with a few results.

Sylvia Marquez Galan said, “Forgive as soon as possible and definitely resolve unfinished issues!!”

Juan Rubio simply replied “Fishing,” while Julio Saldana posted, “More opportunities to comment on the drama of man.”

Joe Crowder commented, “I'm surprised that no one said their income tax......”

Chris Chill Hill is looking forward to the ever simple, but popular answer of “Rain.”

The winner of the poll with two votes, however, is the re-opening of Catfish Corner, which burned down in February of 2013.

You could have added the retirement of Larry Justiss, Tom Green County Library Executive Director, to the list of things to look forward to with much reget. He's been serving in that position for 38 years. I always say that the heart of a city is its library. You want their history, you start there. It won't be easy replacing him. It gets me how people are so entrenched here in positions. He was a good one, somebody else might not be resistance to change but he was at the forefront bringing technology to the common masses and a cool new downtown building to patronize. I'm still trying to shake off the rumor that San Angelo was the town that 'Footloose' the movie was based on. So much has happen that it's hard to draw comparison to, in the last ten years. I expect more changes will come our way in 2014.
No question the Larry Justiss years at our county library have been ones for the books. I salute Larry's service to our community. May he write more wonderful chapters in his life. His years speak volumes about service and competence.
It has been my privilege to know Larry Justiss on a casual basis, usually seeing him once a year at Texas Library Assn conference. It has been a GREAT privilege and good fortune to move to San Angelo where he has been serving as library director. (And I can most assuredly say that I don't like the fact that he is retiring--though I wish him well.) Most people don't realize it, but the library business changes like everything else. It can be hard to stay up, and from personal experience I can say that the temptation at times is to say "This far and no farther!" I am continually amazed every time I go in the library or log on to the website at what is available. I am also pleased to see it well-used. I'm sure whoever follows Larry will do a great job--but they have a tough act to follow!
