Mother of Daniel Perez Leads Police on Manhunt in South San Angelo

The mother of Daniel Perez attempted to run from police Saturday, but was caught by K-9 “Duke” and Officer Brian Gesch.

According to San Angelo police, Perez was riding shotgun in a vehicle that was the subject of a routine traffic stop by Officer Patrick Garrett on East Avenue M Saturday. The driver of the car pulled over to the right hand side of the roadway. The passenger door opened and Garrett observed a female flee on foot. Garrett stayed with the vehicle and called for backup.

Officer Gesch and K-9 Duke worked a perimeter setup by other officers. A short time later, Duke alerted on Perez’ scent, finding her hiding behind a storage shed in the 1700 block of South Chadbourne Street.

Perez did not resist arrest She was booked for evading arrest and for an outstanding felony warrant for theft. She was transported to the Tom Green County Jail. According to jail records, Perez posted $9,000 in surety bonds for both charges Sunday through a bail bondsman.

The spotlight was on Perez earlier this year when her son, 15-year-old Daniel Perez, was found dead in the Concho River near The Bosque on May 1st. When the tragedy with Daniel happened, Perez was in the state penitentiary, nearing the end of a 180-day jail term that began on January 17, 2014 for theft of property valued at less than $1,500 with two or more prior convictions. On May 2, the day after Daniel’s body was found, a judge ordered Perez released from the penitentiary via shock probation.

The police said the 15-year-old’s death did not involve foul play.
