SAN ANGELO, TX -- San Angelo has been ranked the 15th-best city in the United States for retirees in 2027, according to U.S. News & World Report rankings.
The West Texas city earned the spot with 2025 housing costs of $191,261, a value index of 9 and a population that is 17% age 65 or older. Those figures place it among six Texas cities in the top 15, up from three on last year’s list. Two Texas cities — The Woodlands (No. 4) and Spring (No. 5) — finished in the top five.
Florida held two spots in the top 15, led by Homosassa Springs at No. 2 and Palm Coast at No. 10. Neither state claimed the overall top ranking.
That honor went to Midland, Michigan, for the second consecutive year. Midland, Michigan, reported 2025 housing costs of $206,176, a value index of 8.7 and a population that is 21% age 65 or older — figures that highlight its affordability and retiree-friendly taxes rather than any connection to the West Texas city of the same name.
U.S. News analyzed more than 850 cities using factors including quality of life, affordability, healthcare, retiree taxes, the job market, and population and migration trends among people 55 and older. Affordability received heavier weight this year after a survey of Americans 45 and older showed it as a top priority for those considering where to retire.
“It’s no secret that affordability is top of mind for Americans this year, which is why US News updated its weighting criteria to better align with what retirees prioritize,” said Megan Wood, U.S. News & World Report assistant managing editor. “The 2027 rankings reflect key metrics used to highlight the places that best suit retiree needs.”
Wood added that retirees “are seeking a place that gives them a sense of security and comfort as they live out their golden years.”
Other Texas cities in the top 15 were Victoria (No. 12), Pearland (No. 13) and Conroe (No. 14). Texas’ overall affordability has made the state a popular choice for retirees and other generations alike, according to the Business Insider report.
The full top 15 also included Bismarck, North Dakota (No. 11); Lynchburg, Virginia (No. 9); Paducah, Kentucky (No. 8); Altoona, Pennsylvania (No. 7); Rio Rancho, New Mexico (No. 6); and Weirton, West Virginia (No. 3).
