Milo, Conservative and Former Gay Provocateur, Deported

NEW ORLEANS, LA — U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested Milo Yiannopoulos on Thursday, Aug. 27, at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport. The Department of Homeland Security confirmed Friday that the 41-year-old British commentator is in ICE custody in Louisiana and subject to a final order of removal.

DHS said Yiannopoulos, a U.K. citizen, legally entered the United States through New York City on May 14, 2019, then “chose to overstay his welcome in violation of our nation’s laws.” An immigration judge issued the removal order on July 22 after he failed to appear at a hearing. He remains in custody pending deportation.

DHS referred to him as “an illegal alien from the United Kingdom” and posted his mugshot. The agency repeated its broader message that detention is a choice and that people in the country illegally should use the CBP Home app to self-deport, noting an offer of $3,000 and a free flight.

Reports placed him in New Orleans ahead of a scheduled performance by Ye (formerly Kanye West), with whom Yiannopoulos has worked as a spokesman and former Yeezy staffer. ICE records list him in custody; family and attorneys were directed to the Enforcement and Removal office in Alexandria, Louisiana.

Laura Loomer publicly claimed credit, saying she had previously reported his status and that he had lived and worked in the U.S. while out of status. Yiannopoulos did not immediately comment. The British embassy was asked for a response.

Born Milo Hanrahan on Oct. 18, 1984, in Chatham, Kent, England, he later took the surname Yiannopoulos from his paternal grandmother. He is of mixed Greek, Irish, and British ancestry, attended the University of Manchester and Wolfson College, Cambridge without graduating, and built a career as a technology journalist before becoming a high-profile political commentator.

He rose to national attention in the mid-2010s as a senior editor at Breitbart News, a central figure in Gamergate coverage, and the host of the “Dangerous Faggot” college speaking tour. He styled himself a free-speech provocateur who attacked feminism, Islam, political correctness, and campus leftism while being openly gay. He married a man and headlined “Gays for Trump” events. Critics called his rhetoric racist and hateful; supporters treated him as a troll who exposed double standards.

His peak ended in 2017 after old comments about relationships between older men and younger teenage boys surfaced. He resigned from Breitbart, was dropped from CPAC, and lost speaking gigs and social-media platforms. He later interned for then-Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene and worked with Ye on political and business projects, including a falling-out after Ye announced an adult-entertainment line under Yeezy.

In 2021 he publicly identified as “ex-gay,” said he was living celibate, and emphasized his Catholic faith. On *The Tucker Carlson Show* in December 2025 he went further. He said “nobody’s gay,” described male homosexuality as a set of behaviors and a trauma response rather than an innate identity, and called mainstreaming homosexuality inside the Republican Party “the great regret of my life.” He argued gay activists invented the idea of a fixed sexual orientation and said he had spent years trying to leave that life behind.

Yiannopoulos had been one of the louder online voices demanding more deportations. He called for ICE checkpoints at California supermarkets, gas stations, and intersections, “on the spot deportation for anyone who can’t prove they are in the US legally,” millions of removals, and legal immunity for ICE agents. Those posts are now circulating next to news of his own detention.

He previously described holding an O-1 visa, the category for people of extraordinary ability. That status expired. After years in the country, a missed immigration hearing produced a final removal order. ICE then picked him up at an airport.

The case is straightforward under current enforcement: legal entry followed by overstay, a missed court date, a removal order, and arrest. What makes it news is the identity of the person in custody — a longtime immigration hawk who spent a decade as one of the most recognizable gay conservative personalities in America, then spent the last several years telling audiences there is no such thing as “being gay.”
