WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Donald Trump and other top U.S. officials were swiftly evacuated from the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner at the Washington Hilton on Saturday night after gunshots rang out near the event, triggering a rapid Secret Service response. No serious injuries were reported among attendees, though one Secret Service officer was struck but saved by a bulletproof vest.
The incident unfolded shortly after 8:30 p.m. ET as hundreds of journalists, celebrities, politicians, and administration officials gathered in the ballroom for the annual "nerd prom" event. Witnesses described hearing five to eight loud bangs, prompting panic as guests ducked under tables and Secret Service agents drew weapons and rushed President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump from the stage.
Video from inside the ballroom captured agents yelling commands like "Stay down!" as they escorted the president and Vice President JD Vance out of the area. Trump was seen briefly stumbling but was quickly assisted. Cabinet members in attendance were also removed safely.
The U.S. Secret Service described the event as a "shooting incident" near the main magnetometer screening area outside the ballroom. A law enforcement official confirmed a gunman opened fire, and the suspect—reportedly armed with a shotgun and possibly other weapons—was apprehended and taken into custody. The FBI responded to the scene at the Hilton.
In a statement and Truth Social posts, President Trump praised law enforcement: "Secret Service and Law Enforcement did a fantastic job. They acted quickly and bravely. The shooter has been apprehended." He initially suggested letting the dinner continue but later returned to the White House for a press conference, noting the evening would be rescheduled.
Trump later told reporters that a Secret Service agent was shot in the vest but is expected to recover fully.
No motive has been released, and the suspect's identity has not been publicly disclosed as of late Saturday night. Authorities continue to investigate.
The White House Correspondents' Association dinner, traditionally a night of roasts and celebrity sightings, was disrupted for the first time in memory by such violence. Trump was attending as president for the first time in over a decade. The event is expected to be fully rescheduled.

It's no small irony that the Blue, "Now I'll show YOU how it feels," party is the most lacking in metacognition and self-awareness. It will be almost comical when they finally attempt their coup and find themselves facing mirrors reflecting their energy with deadly accuracy.
