Texas Deputy Killed by Debris During Traffic Stop

 

LAMESA, TX — A Dawson County Sheriff's deputy was killed in the line of duty Tuesday afternoon after being hit by debris during a traffic stop near U.S. Highway 180 and North Avenue V, just west of Lamesa.

According to a release from the Texas Department of Public Safety, Deputy Jesse Perez, 42, was conducting a traffic stop around 12:30 p.m. April 22 when debris from a passing commercial vehicle hit him.

He was transported by EMS to Lamesa Medical Arts Hospital, where he died from his injuries at 1:44 p.m.

Deputy Perez had served with the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office for eight months.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office and the family of Deputy Perez,” the Dawson County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.

The Texas Highway Patrol is also investigating the incident.

No further details have been released at this time.
