Homeless Man in California Wins $1 Million on Scratch-Off Lottery Ticket

SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA — A homeless man in California reportedly won $1 million on a scratch-off lottery ticket earlier this month.

The ticket was sold at Sandy’s Liquor in San Luis Obispo, California, on April 6. The store manager, Wilson Samaan, said the winner — who has not been identified — is a longtime customer.

Samaan said the man initially thought he won $100,000 before being told it was actually $1 million.

According to the California State Lottery, the odds of winning on that particular scratch-off ticket is 1 in 2,047,423.

The store owner said he drove the man, who doesn’t own a vehicle, to Fresno to claim his ticket with the state lottery.

However, a spokesperson with the lottery office said it could take a few weeks or even months before any money is awarded due to a “very thorough vetting process.”
