In recent years, West Texans have witnessed a troubling rise in earthquakes—an unexpected threat in a region known for its stability. While the causes of these seismic events are complex, what is clear is that the people of Texas have not received adequate protections from the state, specifically from Representative Drew Darby. Despite growing evidence of risk, Darby has failed to take meaningful action to address the safety concerns of his district. His persistent inaction is, at best, an irresponsible neglect of duty and, at worst, a betrayal of the trust his constituents placed in him. The residents of West Texas should be deeply unsettled by the indifference their representative has shown toward their wellbeing.

One might assume that Darby’s inaction could be attributed to a lack of knowledge or resources. Yet, his tenure in the Texas Legislature spans nearly two decades, meaning he has had ample time to understand the issues facing his district and to take steps to mitigate any threats. Other states with similar issues have responded by enacting policies to protect communities, or at the very least, by investigating the nature and sources of the seismic risks. Yet Darby has done neither, leaving West Texans vulnerable to an increasing pattern of disturbances.

The problem, then, is not a matter of resources or awareness. Rather, it is Darby’s unwillingness to prioritize the safety of his constituents. As a representative, he has access to experts, resources, and information that could inform a practical response. He could push for studies to evaluate the extent of the risk, develop response strategies, and initiate safety measures to protect people, homes, and businesses from future events. But Darby has chosen not to pursue any of these options, leaving his district to fend for itself as earthquakes grow more frequent and potentially more dangerous.

For those who have experienced the unsettling sensation of their homes and communities shaken by tremors, this inaction borders on disregard. The science around seismic risks and their mitigation is not new, and the knowledge is accessible to those in positions of leadership. Darby’s failure to act, even at a minimal level, suggests a striking lack of commitment to the wellbeing of his district. He has not pushed for research, nor has he raised awareness in the legislature or in public forums. Even modest initiatives—such as emergency preparedness training or recommendations for more resilient building codes—have been left untouched.

West Texans should not have to question whether their representative is invested in their safety. The absence of meaningful action from Darby should be a wake-up call to his constituents. When faced with a potential public safety hazard, the first responsibility of any leader is to protect their people. But Darby’s pattern of inaction reveals a representative who appears indifferent to the risks his district is facing. If he has any awareness of the mounting concerns, he has certainly not demonstrated it through policy or advocacy.

What is perhaps most troubling about Darby’s approach is the message it sends. His indifference implicitly conveys that the safety of his district is not a priority, that West Texans must simply endure these risks without support from their elected officials. In a role where decisive leadership is crucial, Darby’s silence and inaction do nothing but leave his constituents vulnerable and ignored.

West Texans deserve better. They deserve a representative who will address their concerns with urgency and take every measure possible to protect them. The silence from Darby’s office only serves to magnify the risk, undermining the sense of security his constituents should be able to rely on. His failure to even discuss policies that could mitigate the dangers is a glaring omission, one that speaks to a broader failure to fulfill his most basic duty to his district.

In the end, Representative Darby’s legacy in office risks becoming one defined by negligence and a disregard for the people he was elected to serve. The people of his district have the right to expect more than empty promises and unkept assurances. They should demand leadership that stands firmly for their safety, that listens to their concerns, and that acts swiftly when dangers arise. Darby’s ongoing failure to respond to the seismic risks facing West Texas should serve as a stark reminder of the cost of indifference and the urgent need for representatives who put their constituents’ welfare above all else.
