CLEVELAND, TX - Several players from Willis High School’s football team have been disciplined after a video surfaced showing them spanking members of the Cleveland High School team with belts following a blowout 77-0 victory last Friday night.
The incident is part of a growing trend on social media known as the “BTA challenge,” where athletes use belts to spank their opponents after a win.
The unsportsmanlike act occurred as players were expected to shake hands, but instead, Willis players used belts in a display of poor sportsmanship.
Cleveland ISD responded with a statement condemning the behavior, explaining that official complaints had been filed with the University Interscholastic League and the District Executive Committee.
"The district is aware of a video making the rounds on social media involving the Willis High School varsity football team and their inappropriate actions towards our varsity football team following last Friday night's game," the statement read. "Please know that this situation has been addressed by Cleveland ISD earlier this week. Superintendent McCanless has personally spoken with the Willis ISD superintendent, and official complaints have been filed with UIL and DEC. Cleveland ISD does not endorse unsportsmanlike conduct and will continue to take appropriate action moving forward."
Willis ISD also expressed disappointment in the players’ actions, emphasizing that the behavior does not reflect the district’s values. The students involved will face disciplinary measures, including suspension for the first half of their next game, mandatory community service, and additional consequences under review by UIL. The district conveyed its regrets to Cleveland ISD, promising steps to prevent future incidents.
