WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congressman August Pfluger released a statement Monday in response to what he called a "radical proposal" by President Joe Biden to overhaul the Supreme Court of the United States.
In an opinion piece published by the Washington Post — which was purportedly written by Biden — the President called on Congress to do away with lifetime appointments to the court.
The editorial stated, among other proposals, that Congress should pass legislation to establish a system in which the sitting president would appoint a justice every two years to spend 18 years in service on the court.
“President Biden’s proposal to overhaul the Supreme Court of the United States will go nowhere in a Republican Congress," Pfluger said in a statement. "This radical desire for power is meant to benefit Congressional Democrats and the Biden-Harris Administration beset with court defeats after numerous unconstitutional actions.
"For all the endless lectures about ‘saving democracy,’ they always seem to be the ones dismantling it.”
Overhauling the Supreme Court, which has a 6-3 conservative majority, has been a hot topic with the Democrat base in recent years.
Biden's opinion piece also proposed legislation establishing a court code of ethics that would require justices to disclose gifts, refrain from public political activity and recuse themselves from cases in which they or their spouses have financial or other conflicts of interest.
Biden also is calling on Congress to pass a constitutional amendment reversing the Supreme Court’s recent ruling that determined former presidents have broad immunity from prosecution.
“I have great respect for our institutions and separation of powers,” Biden's editorial stated. “What is happening now is not normal, and it undermines the public’s confidence in the court’s decisions, including those impacting personal freedoms. We now stand in a breach.”
Vice President Kamala Harris endorsed the proposal in a statement said the reforms being proposed “will help to restore confidence in the Court, strengthen our democracy, and ensure no one is above the law.”
Biden planned to speak about his proposal later Monday during an address as the LBJ Presidential Library in Austin, Texas, to mark the 60th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act.
Biden has dropped his bid for reelection after obvious issues of cognitive decline became apparent on a national stage during a debate with former President Donald Trump in June.
