About the Woman Arrested by an Armada of Police This Morning

SAN ANGELO, TX — Early this morning, an armada of San Angelo Police Department Ford Interceptors rushed to the Stripes Convenience Store at 1322 S. Bryant Blvd. We counted nine police cars.

Some of the interceptors were positioned behind the Stripes and around the Cross Keys Apartments. Others were at the gas pumps, where a black Jeep SUV was searched. It was parked at the pumps, ready to gas up.

During the operation, police arrested 27-year-old Mikayla Menzies for not showing up at a court date in December 2023 and forfeiting her $10,000 bond. Bail bondsman Ricky Villarreal was holding the bond for her.

Menzies' trouble with the law began at the Walmart SuperCenter at 5501 Sherwood Way on August 25, 2022. Walmart security was alerted that Menzies was about to exit the store with stolen items in her purse. Walmart employees stopped her and called the police. She attempted to walk away, but the police told her she was detained. She then offered to return the stolen merchandise.

She was escorted to the Walmart Asset Protection office, where she removed the items from her purse. After scanning the items, Walmart informed police the total value of the merchandise was $104.43.

At this point, police placed Menzies under arrest. After cuffing her, police conducted a body search and found a plastic bag of white crystal substance stuffed in her bra, according to the police report. It tested positive for methamphetamine, and she possessed 1.2 grams of it. Also hidden there was a gold container with two small plastic bags. One bag contained a blue round pill marked “TEVA 3927,” which police identified as Diazepam. The other bag contained a black tar substance that police identified as heroin during a field test. The heroin weighed 0.6 grams.

She was charged with three counts of possession and theft of property between $100 and $750.

The theft charge was dropped, and the possession of the prescription drug charge was dismissed. The meth and heroin charges were state jail felonies, and she agreed to three years probation. One charge was deferred, and the other was the main offense in her plea deal on November 18, 2022.

By January 17, 2023, her probation was revoked for her absence from the Tom Green County Court Residential Treatment Center on December 14, 2022.

The wheels of justice turn slowly in the county, and she was allowed to remain out of jail on a $10,000 bond from Freedom/Libertad Bail Bonds. When her court hearing on December 11, 2023, occurred, Menzies was not there. Her bond was increased to $20,000. Her bail bondsman asked the court to take her off bond because she wasn’t checking in with him either.

This morning, June 1, 2024, over six months after her failure to appear in court to answer for her absence from the treatment center, police found her at the Stripes and arrested her. She was traveling with a small dog.

She is being held at the Tom Green County Correctional Center for not showing up for her MTR court hearing and for having her original bond revoked for drug possession and unauthorized absence from the treatment facility.
