ALPINE, Texas — Border Patrol agents from the Alpine, Texas Station confiscated over 530 pounds of marijuana during a vehicle stop about a mile south of the Border Patrol checkpoint on Highway 385 on Sunday.
The seizure took place around 9 a.m. on Feb. 4, when agents from the Alpine Station observed a vehicle parked on the shoulder of Highway 385, south of the checkpoint. Two agents conducted a welfare check on the vehicle and engaged with the driver, identified as a Cuban national. Upon inspection, agents discovered suspicious-looking bundles concealed under a blanket in the back of the vehicle. A Border Patrol canine detected the presence of narcotics, and subsequent testing confirmed the bundles contained marijuana.
The driver was taken into custody for possession of marijuana, an illegal controlled substance under Federal Law. A total of 19 bundles of marijuana weighing approximately 530.29 pounds were seized, with an estimated street value of around $424,232.00.
Big Bend Sector Chief Patrol Agent Walter N. Slosar commended the vigilance of the Border Patrol agents in Alpine, Texas, stating, “The vigilance of our Border Patrol agents in Alpine, Texas led to a significant seizure of illegal Marijuana. Our agents, as part of their border security mission, interdict illegal narcotics being transported across the border intended for the interior of the country. The work that they do to disrupt Transnational Criminal Organization’s drug smuggling operations is vital to protecting our citizens from these illegal substances.”
The case, along with the confiscated narcotics, has been transferred to the Drug Enforcement Agency for further investigation and prosecution.

PermalinkI don't have a major problem with weed. When I was a young man I took a toke or two... but not in the last forty years. Regarding the hard stuff, the sad fact here is that we provide the market for that poison and vermin simply work to satisfy the demands of that market. Also, depending on the reason for addiction I MIGHT have a bit of sympathy for a user, but I have none whatsoever for those who provide the stuff. I wish them nothing but many days and nights in a prison cell with unpleasant cellmates/boyfriends.

PermalinkI relate to and agree with everything you said. I also believe if the drugs weren't so readily available the market would shrink some.

PermalinkYour last comment is interesting and worthwhile. I don't know what drives people to put stuff in their bodies that while providing a temporary escape from the ills of the world promises only long-term misery and in many cases death. Like most folks I've had good times and bad times. I have been blessed by my having the good times far outweigh the bad, and all in all I have been very lucky whether I deserve it or not. Every day I thank God for that.
I cannot imagine my living in a world doing things the results of which I see every day on the streets, or the things that drove my crack-addicted stepson to do the things he has done. Dealing with him before he vanished was interesting in that he is not ordinarily stupid, and most of the time was pleasant to be around. I cannot even say he is a bad person in that his crimes were always non-violent, but they were still crimes.
I think about the time he wandered far away from the house to the point where his ankle bracelet should have triggered but did not. Had it done so, the law dogs would have snatched him up and he would have gone back to jail. As it was, he called me and asked me to come pick him up. I did so, and ate his ass completely out because he had wandered so far out of bounds. He could not understand why I was so angry. I could not understand why he was so freaking stupid.
Getting back to your comment, I firmly believe that even if some bad stuff is not so readily available or inexpensive other stuff will fill the gap. Shifts from one form of poison, like from opioids to heroin, can result because of price/supply changes. If there is a market for poison supply will move to meet the market. The problem is the market.
In short, I have no answers here. Right now I think I'll go solve a problem I can handle... like getting the leaves out of my yard. I'll save the hard stuff for later.
Peace, amigo.
