SAN ANGELO— A San Angelo man has taken a plea deal to a lesser charge for a brutal sexual assault two years ago.
Jose Jaime Perez Hernandez, 30, took a plea deal and was sentenced to six years in state prison for the violent assault of a woman. Hernandez was originally charged with Aggravated Sexual Assault but was allowed to plea to a charge of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon for beating the woman with a wooden board before sexually assaulting her.
According to court documents, on September 13, 2022, San Angelo Police were dispatched to an area close to the 100 block of East 25th Street and located the victim on an assault. After the scene was secured, the victim said that she had personal belonging in the backyard of one of the residences on the block. Also, the victim went to Shannon Medical Center and completed a sexual assault exam and was briefly interviewed.
At the scene, officers spoke with the homeowner of the residence in question, and she gave them consent to go into the backyard. The victim’s library card and a wooden board used in the assault were taken.
The next day, on September 14, 2022, the victim was interviewed again. She said that the defendant, identified as Hernandez, messaged her on social media, they began talking and even hung out a few times. She went to meet with Hernandez at a convenience store and rode back with him to the residence on East 25th Street and parked in the backyard.
Once there, the victim began ignoring Hernandez who then exited the vehicle. He walked around the vehicle and opened the passenger door and slapped the victim. He then grabbed her by her hair and pulled her out of the truck. Hernandez then took her to the tire of the vehicle and told her that this is where she was going to die. The victim said that Hernandez wanted to run over her head with the tire.
Then, Hernandez told the victim to remove her jewelry, or he would assault her again. He told the victim that she would “die tonight”, that she was not going home, that she needed to tell everyone that she would not be home, and that she loved him. Hernandez then grabbed a wooden board and told the victim to stand against the truck and not move. He proceeded to strike the victim with the board.
After this, Hernandez went through the victim’s wallet then went and grabbed a beer. He drank the beer and asked what would happen if he broke the bottle and cut the victim’s throat with it.
After asking the victim what would happen, he told her to take off her clothes, which she did. Then Hernandez grabbed her by the hair and threw her across the seat of the truck and sexually assaulted her. A short time later, the victim was able to grab her cell phone and she fled from the scene.
Hernandez was jailed for the Aggravated Sexual Assault on March 2, 2023, and was released on March 28, 2023, before going back to jail on March 30, 2023, for assaulting a family member. That charge was later dismissed. He was released on May 20, 2023. He went back to jail on July 16, 2023, for Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle.
In exchange for the guilty plea, Hernandez was sentenced to six years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice Institutional Division and pleaded to the lesser charge of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon and had the Assault of a Family Member charge dismissed.

It’s crazy. The judicial system in the State of Texas allows a man to beat a woman with a board, rape her and draw a 6 year sentence? He’ll be out raping someone else in 3-4 years! I’m shaking my head.
