AUSTIN, TX – The Texas University Interscholastic League Standing Committee on Athletics will be addressing various items submitted by the public at a meeting next week with the most contentious issue being a proposal to permit boys to participate in girls' volleyball.
The committee will hold a hearing on June 13, 2023, at 8 a.m. in Round Rock to consider proposals put forth by the public. The primary focus will be on establishing a boys' volleyball league, but there will also be a controversial proposal to allow boys to compete in girls' volleyball.
During the recent legislative session in Texas, a bill was passed that requires college athletes to participate in sports based on their gender at birth. This legislation aims to address concerns about transgender athletes participating in women's sports.
In the case of high school students in Texas, there are currently no specific rules governing this matter. In fact, all boys sports in the state are technically classified as "open sports." The primary objective is to grant girls the opportunity to participate in sports that are traditionally offered only to boys. in central Texas, the Mason Punchers garnered national attention when Tristin Keller, a girl, made the football team.
However, it is worth considering what might happen if the situation were reversed. An incident in North Carolina provides an example. Payton McNabb, a high school volleyball player from Hiwassee Dam High School, suffered severe injuries after being struck in the face by a transgender individual who was assigned male at birth. Subsequently, McNabb has been leading a group advocating for legislative measures to protect female high school athletes.
This issues is not the only proposal the committee will be hearing either. The following is the full list of proposals:
- A proposal to prohibit train horns at football games
- A proposal to allow 1A schools to participate in additional tournaments in exchange for individual games
- A proposal to prohibit cheerleaders at basketball games
- A proposal to allow audio communication devices for hearing-impaired athletes in basketball
- A proposal to allow the district champion home field advantage in the first round of soccer playoffs
- A proposal to allow two PE courses
- A proposal to require officials to be paid for games cancelled by the schools within 5 days
- A proposal to add boys volleyball as a UIL sanctioned activity
- A proposal to allow boys to participate on the girls volleyball team
- A proposal to prohibit coaches from coaching their own child at the school they are employed
- A proposal to extend the December game limitation rule to Thanksgiving break
- A proposal to amend the softball and baseball rules regarding batters
- A proposal to add table tennis as a UIL sanctioned activity
- A proposal to prohibit all athletic activities during the month of July
- A proposal to allow coaches to coach 7 on 7 leagues in the summer
