DEMMITT, TX – An explosion at a dairy farm operation south of Demmitt in the Texas Panhandle killed 18,000 dairy cows Monday.
According to the Castro County Sheriff's Office, one person was critically injured in the explosion.
The Castro County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the cows were in a holding area before being brought in for milking when the blast occurred at the Southfork Dairy Farm in Dimmitt.
Very few cows in the holding area survived.
Castro County has the second largest share of milk production. With the price of a dairy cow estimating at $1300 the disaster is showing to be a large loss. That's about $23 million worth of production dairy animals.
Officials say a piece of dairy equipment probably overheated causing the explosion but the exact cause is under investigation by state Fire authorities at this time.

Holy cow!! no pun intended I can't imagine anything on a dairy farm that could cause an explosion large enough to kill 18,000 cows. What a mess that must have made. Please be on top of any new info SAL.
